Se dietro un grande uomo c'è una grande donna, dietro una grande band c'è un grande manager. e se sei stato il manager del più grande fenomeno musicale della storia, beh... devi essere stato un grande grande grande manager.

The Fifth Beatle - The Brian Epstein Story, pubblicato in USA da Dark Horse e in Italia da Panini, è la biografia un po' romanzata un po' no di Brian Epstein, quel grande grande grande manager.

Fondamentalmente The Fifth Beatle è una storia d'amore: la storia di un uomo in cerca d'amore, omosessuale in un periodo in cui, in Inghilterra, l'essere omosessuali non era semplicemente sconveniente ma era un reato vero e proprio, l'amore di quest'uomo per sti 4 ragazzetti che ascoltò in un buco di locale una sera, in cui vide un potenziale che gli altri non avevano visto e sui quali decise di scommettere tutta la sua vita per farli diventare "più grandi di Elvis".

Quindi occhio, se cercate un libro che vi parli di come Lennon e McCartney si scornassero o di qualunque altro dettaglio sulla vita della band qua cascate male, i Beatles ci sono e sono anche molto presenti, ma solo nella misura in cui la loro presenza è funzionale a raccontare la storia di Epstein, perchè questa è la SUA storia. Insomma, qui ci troverete il racconto delle trattative telefoniche per l'ingaggio all' Ed Sullivan Show e ben poco sullo show in se.

Il ritratto che si fa di Epstein in questo fumetto è, senza mezzi termini, straordinario. Una persona si coi propri demoni e un bel buco dentro, ma che s'indaffarava a tappare circondandosi di amici, dedicandosi al lavoro, una persona positiva, di successo, felice. In un genere in cui si rincorronno i gusti del pubblico, convinto che qualsiasi storia infarcita di cheap dramah sia seria, adulta e di qualità una rappresentazione (al netto) così gioiosa della vita di una storia comunque tragica è rara ed è una bella boccata d'aria fresca.

Dicevo che questo fumetto è una storia d'amore, e di certo è anche l'amore di Vivek Tiwari (cioè, questo si chiama come Vivec, il dio dunmer di Morrowind!), lo scrittore, per la figura di Epstein, che l'ha portato a scrivere questa storia documentandosi per anni, parlando con colleghi, amici e familiari. Un atto d'amore sincero che ti fa guardare con occhio più benevolo ad alcune incertezze della sceneggiatura e al gusto un po' naive di far parlare troppo spesso i personaggi usando titoli e versi di canzoni, dopotutto non è esattamente il suo mestiere, Tiwari nasce produttore teatrale e questo è il suo primo fumetto

Quello che non ha bisogno di alcuna clemenza è il comparto artistico, stellare. The Fifth Beatle è uno dei fumetti meglio colorati che mi siano mai passati per le mani, Andrew Robinson parte si con 4-5 tavole scure e smorte ma per poi farle esplodere di colore al primo incontro di Epstein coi bacarozzi e da lì in poi sarà un'orgia di colori così '60 che Austin Powers scansate. Colori a parte Robinson si presenta con uno storytelling impeccabile, stile in generale realistico ma che riesce a fare un paio di imbeccate "nell'horror" (gli incontri col ventriloquo ed il manager di Elvis) e nell'onirico del finale. A fargli un po' da contraltare c'è Kyle Baker che, ogni tanto, ci mette lo zampino e piazza 3-4 tavole dallo stile cartoonesco per rappresentare i momenti un po' più drammatici della storia nella maniera meno drammatica possibile, un esempio su tutti il racconto del tour asiatico che sembra uscito da una puntata del cartone di Archie

In una scala delle tue canzoni preferite dei Beatles che va da un B-Side che non si ricorda nessuno (ce ne sarà uno, no?) a Hey Jude, The Fifth Beatle -The Brian Epstein Story è All You Need is Love, che riassume un po' tutta la vita di Epstein per come è raccontata in questo fumetto: Tutto ciò di cui aveva bisogno era l'amore, l'ha cercato per tutta la vita, l'ha trovato in un posto inaspettato e l'ha poi rigirato a tutto il mondo regalandogli i Beatles... E se è vero che In the end the love you take is equal to the love you make st'ometto qua avrebbe bisogno di riceverne molto di più, la sua storia dovrebbe essere molto più nota. Leggersi, comprare e regalare questo fumetto potrebbe essere un inizio.

L’intera saga di Rising Stars, la rivisitazione dell’epopea supereroistica fatta dal grande J. Michael Straczynski, raccolta in un elegante (ed enorme!) volume. All'interno troverete i 24 numeri della serie introdotti da una prefazione scritta da Neil Gaiman!

Qua sono stati molto più scarni di presentazioni invece, e tocca lavorà a me. Rising Stars è una serie pubblicata dalla Image tra la fine dei '90 e l'inizio dei '00.
