The Unwritten: Tommy Taylor and the Ship That Sank Twice

Diciamocela tutta, la Vertigo non è che se la passi tanto bene ultimamente. Le grandi serie del passato ormai stanno un po' troppo nel passato, Scalped è finito da un paio d'anni, Fables è l'ombra di quello che era 5-6 anni fa e le serie chiamate a sostituirli si sn rivelate ad esser generosi deludenti ed han chiuso presto i battenti (si, Saucer Country, ce l'ho soprattutto con te) mentre dall'altro lato la Image sembra non riuscire a sbagliare un colpo neanche se ci si applica. L'unica cosa che salverei senza pensarci due volte della Vertigo attuale è The Unwritten di Mike Carey e Peter Gross.

Di che parla? di Tom Taylor, il figlio di uno scrittore inglese che ha avuto un successo mondiale grazie ad una serie di libri su un maghetto occhialuto che stranamente non si chiama Erripotte ma Tommy Taylor! I fan della serie hanno incominciato a confondere fantasia e realtà ed hanno incominciato a pensare che il Tommy dei libri fosse lo stesso Tom della realtà, trasformandolo in una sorta di strana celebrità e icona nerd. Ua specie di Wil Weathon ma simpatico, per capirci. I guai per Tom iniziano quando, appena prima dell'uscita del capitolo finale della serie, il padre scompare nel nulla, scopre di non esserne il figlio biologico ed inizia a pensare anche lui di poter essere la quattrocchia volante dei libri... Questo spiegherebbe perché della sua infanzia non ricorda niente di niente, per esempio...

Mike Carey uno è sempre portato un po' a vederlo come l'eterna promessa non mantenuta del fumetto: sulla sua produzione supereroica possiamo metterci una pietra sopra, fuori dal genere di roba bella ed anche bellissima ne ha fatta (dico Lucifer e voi siete obbligati a commuovervi adesso) ma è sembrato sempre muoversi nella scia di qualcun'altro. Con the Unwritten ha tirato fuori però una bella storia, importante, sul potere delle storie e di chi le racconta, con cui che sembra aver tagliato una volta per tutte il cordone ombelicale che lo teneva legato, almeno nella produzione fantasy, a Neil Gaiman.

Dopo sto pippottone infinito direi che possiamo parlare di Tommy Taylor and the Ship That Sank Twice che è un fumetto un po' particolare poiché non si colloca nella continuity generale di The Unwritten (di cui a fine mese in USA uscirà l'ottavo volume), non segue Tom Taylor e la sua ricerca della verità, ma è l'adattamento a fumetti del primo romanzo di Wilson Taylor con protagonista Tommy.

Nonostante sia figlio dei due più grandi maghi della loro generazione, a Tommy manca la scintilla, la capacità innata di castare incantesimi, e vive e lavora nelle cucine della scuola per giovano maghetti che non si chiama Hogwarts ma ci siamo capiti lo stesso. Quando il Gran Consiglio dei maghi decide di recuperare dagli abissi la nave su cui viaggiavano e sono morti i genitori di Tommy, che portava un carico misterioso ma di sicuro grande valore, iniziano i veri casini perché unico passeggero di quella nave è un losco figuro che i lettori della serie regolare conoscono bene...
La storia questa è, una favoletta ben scritta che nemmeno prova a far finta di essere tanto ma tanto debitrice ad Erripotte, dall'impostazione classica e dai toni... si può dire tono fmettoso per un fumetto? Vabbuò ormai l'ho detto. Si, insomma, una roba fatta bene, molto meglio del primo romanzo di Erripotte se vogliamo proprio metterci a fare le pulci, ma niente di nuovo. La cosa più particolare è che il racconto viene intercalato da flashback con protagonista Wilson Taylor che raccontano la genesi del romanzo e dove viene svelato uno dei segreti più segretissimi della serie: Tom e Tommy sono la stessa persona? Questa è la cosa che fa storcere più il naso, com'è, so 4 anni e passa che me la stai a menare su sta roba nella serie regolare e poi me lo sveli nel romanzo fuori serie? Poco serio... Tantopiù che come fumetto avrebbe funzionato anche meglio senza quella parte, che magari poteva finire tutta assieme raccolta in un albetto autoconclusivo della serie regolare come Carey ne ha già fatti molti
Dal lato artistico ci si trova di fronte un'opera molto eterogenea perché Peter Gross si è occupato solo dei Layouts e dei flashback, il resto è affidato a vari artisti a rotazione e quindi si passa dalle cupe pagine di apertura dove viene raccontato come la nave del titolo affonda per la prima volta a quelle leggere e pastellose della gita nei fondali marini di metà albo a quelle acide del confronto finale col Conte Ambrosio di fine volume. Il risultato è un po' un minestrone di roba tanto diversa ma il livello resta sempre alto quando non altissimo (le pagine di Kurt Huggins, per esempio) ed i vari stili si sposano bene con il tono dei vari blocchi narrativi.

Nella scala dei tuoi eterni preferiti, che va da Disperazione a Delirio, The Unwritten: Tommy Taylor and the Ship That Sank Twice è Distruzione: Tutti ne parlano, quando lo conosci è diiverso da come te l'aspettavi e ti lscia un bel ricordo che ti porterai dietro per un po'

L'ultima Intervista ad Alan Moore. Speriamo.

... Che più che un'intervista è un monologo ed in cui non dice niente di diverso dal solito, ma se non altro forse sarà veramente l'ultima, la potete leggere qua se c'avete tanto tempo da perdere che è un wall of text da paura.

Un monologo in cui con panegirici molto gustosi ma sempre panegirici cerca di smarcarsi dalle accuse di razzismo e sessismo e poi di tirare la solita carrettata di merda e balle su Grant Morrison (visto che ripete le stesse cose da vent'anni, Morrison ha già risposto con dovizia di particolari e riportando date ed esempi a tutte le  sue paranoie in questo pezzo qua, la mia balla preferita resterà sempre "l'ho presentato io a Karen Berger quando dovevano fare l'etichetta Vertigo" "No ma guarda la Vertigo è nata negli anni '90, tu con la DC non ci parlavi già da 5 anni e io alla DC già avevo pubblicato Animal Man, Doom Patrol, Gothic ed avevamo fatto i milioni con Arkham Asylum, con Karen Berger c'uscivo il sabato sera.").

E' sempre bello vedere quante cose abbia da dire sull'originalità del fumetto contemporaneo uno le cui opere più famose sono state delle riletture di personaggi e storie create da altri e, più in generale, quante cose abbia da dire sul fumettoo uno che, a detta sua, non legge fumetti da 20 anni.

Fa un po' pietà invece vedere quanto la vecchiaia possa far diventare un bisbetico ancora più bisbetico. E non dico certo bisbetico per non dire stronzo, eh. Nono. Lo giuro.

Se poi già eri antipatico prima, porca troia, è na tragedia.

Avete capito? Estimatori di Azzarello, Amanda Conner, Straczynski, Morrison, Cooke, Bermejo, Jae Lee, fratelli Kubert e tutti gli altri? Non comprate più fumetti di Alan Moore, che sennò il vecchio poi se ne dispiace! Siate gentili con gli anziani!

Tanto è da vent'anni che non scrive qualcosa di rilevante artisticamente, quindi non è che vi perdete tanto

Se la diatriba finisse una volta per tutte così sarebbe molto bello però
